Internet shoppers want you to provide them with the information they are looking for almost immediately. They want to know who you are, what you sell, and why you are better than your competition. Listed below are few tips you can apply to your website welcome text that will catch a users attention, and push the shopper to purchase.
Avoid writing bland "Welcome to XYZ site" blurbs.
This is very common on the web, and you want to distinguish yourself. Try something like "Are you looking for the best place to purchase XYZ on the web? You've found it."
Let the visitor know what the website is about.
Clearly state what you're selling. Tell just enough so the reader gains a good understanding of what products you have on offer, and why they should buy from you.
Include a call to action.
Mention an ongoing sale you have. Or, mention/link to your most sold products. If you're selling niche items, try to bring that in as well.
Be concise and direct.
Most web visitors will leave a site if they can't find what they're looking for within the first few seconds, avoid this by cutting out any unneccesary fluff. We recommend about 150 to 200 words. Enough to get your point across, but not so much that a visitor automatically assumes it isn't worth the time to read it.
Another Important Concept to Incorporate is Keyword Rich Content
Make a list of the most common words/phrases associated with your brand and/or products. Select the most important and most often used words from this list, and work those into your welcome message. Mentioning them once or twice, in a natural way so the person reading isn't questioning your legitimacy, will go far in ensuring that you have good presence when people are searching for products that you sell.
That sounds like we might be telling you to write something that reads like this (if you sell rugs):
"We have lots of rugs. So many rugs that we're not sure what to do with all these rugs. Because of our surplus of rugs, we're offering a huge discount on rugs."
That doesn't sound very natural, does it? Instead, aim for something like:
"Here at XYZ we have a large variety of rugs. From traditional to transitional. Contemporary, floral, or southwestern. We even have rare Persian rugs for sale."
This reads more naturally. It includes a strong keyword about what you offer (rugs) and incorporates several different types that people might be searching for (traditional rugs, contemporary rugs, persian rugs). You should aim for something similar, where you hit on a major term, and zero in on a few things within that category that a shopper could be looking for.
